May 22nd, 2008 | WASHINGTON — The House Judiciary Committee on Thursday subpoenaed former White House top political adviser Karl Rove to testify about whether the White House improperly meddled with the Justice Department.

Accusations of politics influencing decisions at the department led to last year’s resignation of former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

The subpoena issued Thursday orders Rove to testify before the House panel on July 10. He is expected to face questions about the White House’s role in firing nine U.S. attorneys in 2006 and the prosecution of former Gov. Don Siegelman of Alabama, a Democrat.

House Judiciary Chairman John Conyers had negotiated with Rove’s attorneys for more than a year over whether the former top aide to President Bush would testify voluntarily.

“It is unfortunate that Mr. Rove has failed to cooperate with our requests,” Conyers, D-Mich., said in a statement. “Although he does not seem the least bit hesitant to discuss these very issues weekly on cable television and in the print news media, Mr. Rove and his attorney have apparently concluded that a public hearing room would not be appropriate.”

There will come an hour of reckoning, oh, yes. And we shall eat his black, evil heart.

    ummm…….he didn’t show up the last time they subpoenaed him and they wussed out on “inherent contempt”……is there any reason to believe this is gonna be any different? I believe Mukasey has said he won’t enforce a contempt citation either, just like his verminous predecessor.

    I would love nothing more that to see this litte worm skewered and roasted slowly (metaphorically speaking, of course). But I will believe it when I see it. When the DOJ is as compromised as it is, and if Mukasey won’t enforce a citation, it comes down to if Congress has the balls to use their power to make him testify. Forgive me the cynicism, but there has been a lot of talk and precious little action thus far.

    I think he knows Conyers is serious. He’ll show and suffer amnesia of Gonzo proportions.

    But I’d give the campaign maximum to any Congressperson that trips him as he struts smugly up the aisle afterwards.

    I must agree with madmommy…

    I am totally not impressed with anything which has been done so far. Lots of meetings, subpoenas and other talk, but no action. I can only hope the democrats will take a majority of both houses and the presidency and then DO SOMETHING!

    But hey, I’m not holding my breath.

    Faithful readers of this space will know that I am backing John McCain for the simple reason that my support has been the kiss of death for any candidate unlucky enough to receive it. Now, bear with me while I defend Pastor Hagee’s remarks.

    As a Jew, it is hard to accept that Hitler was doing the will of G-d. I wish my faith were strong enough to do so. It would be nice to know with every fiber of my being that everything that happens is only by His leave. Struggle though I might, I can’t bring myself to see the world that way.

    Hagee doesn’t seem to have trouble with it. More power to him for believing that G-d is fully in charge. Be that as it may, nobody can accuse Hagee of being anti-Israel. Indeed, I have noted here that I am somewhat embarrassed by my co-religionists’ embrace of Hagee.

    I do have an appreciation of the events related at Passover time. The God I worship causd the death of the firstborn of the Egyptians and then lured the Egyptian army to the Red Sea where they were drowned. I would hate for someone to examine my religious beliefs, with the same scrutiny given to Hagee’s belief in a God who controlled the events of the 20th centry, which led to the foundation of a modern Jewish state in the homeland which He promised to the Jewish people.

    And that’s my defense of Hagee’s comments about the Holocaust. As for my defense of his comments regarding Catholicism ….

    I am speechless.

    Hi, TRexicans. I was skimming by and saw the pix of the adorable new Madkitty.
    I seem to recall Madmommy mentioning she had seen a kitten at the vet’s? Or was it a shelter? I guess this is he, either way.

    Btw, in my experience of bringing new kittehs into a house where some already live, behind a big chair, under the bed, all gooood places to the new kitteh.
    My last boy, brought from my ex’s to my new digs with several “new”kittens, climbed up INTO the recliner from below. After he came out from under the bed, and after the week he refused to come out of the bedroom.

    Young kitty will mix in much sooner.
