From the Department of Look Who’s Talking, the woman who just lost her lead in Pennsylvania is insisting to people that the man who’s beating her “can’t win a general election”.
Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., and former President Bill Clinton are making very direct arguments to Democratic superdelegates, starkly insisting Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., cannot win a general election against presumptive Republican nominee, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.
Sources with direct knowledge of the conversation between Sen. Clinton and Governer Bill Richardson, D-N.M., prior to the Governor’s endorsement of Obama say she told him flatly, “He cannot win, Bill. He cannot win.”
Hey, say that one more time, Hillary, and you’ll be right in line with Karl Rove’s theory of Creative Truthiness, whereby a lie repeated three times becomes The Truth.
This whole sorry business is like a hostage drama unfolding in some airless bank vault, except I’m just not feeling the Stockholm Syndrome thing yet. I’m sure it’ll just be a matter of time before we’re all dancing around singing, “Hil-la-ry for you and me/Bring back our dem-oc-ra-cy”, praising the razor-sharp political acumen of Mark Penn and James Carville, and wondering what on earth we ever saw in that “unelectable” upstart, Barack *cough*HUSSEIN!!!*cough* Obama.
And while we’re here, I would like to include a couple of paragraphs from Gov. Bill Richardson’s OpEd in the WaPo regarding the venom with which the Clinton machine and its surrogates are attacking him now that he has endorsed Obama for the nomination:
Carville and others say that I owe President Clinton’s wife my endorsement because he gave me two jobs. Would someone who worked for Carville then owe his wife, Mary Matalin, similar loyalty in her professional pursuits? Do the people now attacking me recall that I ran for president, albeit unsuccessfully, against Sen. Clinton? Was that also an act of disloyalty?
And while I was truly torn for weeks about this decision, and seriously contemplated endorsing Sen. Clinton, I never told anyone, including President Clinton, that I would do so. Those who say I did are misinformed or worse.
As for Mr. Carville’s assertions that I did not return President Clinton’s calls: I was on vacation in Antigua with my wife for a week and did not receive notice of any calls from the president. I, of course, called Sen. Clinton prior to my endorsement of Sen. Obama. It was a difficult and heated discussion, the details of which I will not share here.
You know, Slick Willie Clinton, I don’t think getting red in the face, shouting, and pointing your finger at people is any more effective a battle plan for you now than it was for Newt Gingrich back in the day. You can stamp your feet and holler all you want, but it’s the voters whose opinion matters now, not yours, and not any of the other millionaire stuffed shirts on the Superdelegate rolls.
What’s that old lawyer adage? If you have the law on your side, bang on the law. If you have the facts on your side, bang on the facts. And if you’ve got neither on your side, bang on the table. Good luck with that. In the meantime, you and your wife have completely shredded any lingering feelings of good will I may have harbored toward you and your legacy. You supported NAFTA, kicked poor people out of social welfare programs, and dragged our whole country through the shrieking melodrama of your marital infidelities. Granted, you had some help with that, but if you’d just kept it zipped in the first place…oh, never mind.
I do not believe that the truth will keep Carville and others from attacking me.
Uh, no, Gov. Richardson, I think you’re right on about that. Playing dead or signing up for Witness Protection may be your only recourse.
I can only say that we need to move on from the politics of personal insult and attacks. That era, personified by Carville and his ilk, has passed and I believe we must end the rancor and partisanship that has mired Washington in gridlock. In my view, Sen. Obama represents our best hope of replacing division with unity. That is why, out of loyalty to my country, I endorse him for president.
Hey, me too! OMG, let’s be friends! Are you on Facebook?
And in honor of Hillary’s diminishing (and in some polls entirely diminished) lead in PA, I think it’s time we ran this photo again. Litbrit? Are you out there reading tonight? This one’s for you.

“Barack Obama is unelectable” is right up there with “I did not have sex with that woman” in terms of actual verifiable falseness, ya know?
oooh, T!! You meanie!!! That one’s way below the….um, belt.
‘Course, it ain’t NUTHIN compared to what the Giant Republican Wurlitzer Scorched Earth UR Dead Shit Steamroller Machine’s gonna unleash come September…..so by all means have at it. Them that can’t stand the heat gotta get the fuck out of the kitchen.

Gawd the look on that little girl’s face is just PRICELESS! Amazing how kids can see right through bullshit, ain’t it?
I sure would have liked to have been privy to that phone conversation between Richardson and Hillary. Don’t you know she just chewed him up one side and down the other. Then Bill got on the phone and gnawed on what was left. *pleh*
Damn, but Barak looks hot in that picture. Thanks T!

If anything is going to break my longstanding hobby of watching American politics this is it. Not just the squabbling, name-calling and back-stabbing, that I can handle. It’s the length of the campaigns. This is going to go on forever, or 4 months, whichever feels longer.

Great post, T. It’s official — Hill and Bill have done lost their minds.
(Persi, left you one last note in the last thread)

EJ Dionne in the Washington Poop the other day noted how this campaign has tarnished the “Clinton Brand.” I.e., before it got started, most Democrats had positive views about both ends of the Billary….but now….eh, not so much.
And with that I must agree. Dunno about the “Brand” stuff, but it is definitely true that I, E. Q. Democrat, am one of those Dionne describes. Can’t stand sight nor sound of either of them anymore.

Somebody remind me of what I said the other day about “hate the sin, love the sinner.” The Clintons are causing my short-term memory to short-circuit.

Not only inaccurate but reeking of desperation. I’ve always liked that Hillary’s persistent, she doesn’t give up easily but if the only way she thinks she can stay in the race is to make blatantly stupid statements trying to undermine Obama, then what was a strength is now a disadvantage. Anybody who wants power that much shouldn’t get it.

Well that picture is fucking appalling, hope you are proud of yourself Rexy. And if any of you think that Bill Richardson is anything BUT a SHANK and a JUDAS, then put down the bong.
To clarify I am not a Hillary supporter, but I am sick of the long knives coming out, and don’t give me some shit about how Obama is somehow above all this, he’s not, and to suggest otherwise is utter horseshit.

Totally.
And–get this–I just ate a half a box of Gummi Bears for lunch.
I swear to the Fates.
Thank you for that lovely, lovely photo, T. I am knocking a post around in my mind right now, one that ends up announcing the arrival of The New Sherriff (accompanied, of course, by The Photo.) Oh, but I need more HOURS in my day!
By litbrit on Apr 3, 2008 12:40 pm |
Hey jimbo, who the hell are you referring to with that “you people” remark?
And Grandjester–think about what YOU’RE saying. How is Obama not a remarkable, inspiring, electable Democratic candidate–the best one we’ve seen in at least a generation? Feel free to enumerate the Whys in a response. We’ll wait.
Those of us who support Senator Obama do so because of who he is, where he’s been, what he has done, and most importantly, what he will do. Constitutional law, baby. That’s what he taught. That should tell you a little something, for starters.
That he looks so fine in a cowboy hat is simply icing on the cake (or candy, if you will.) We’re just having a bit of fun with that.
Problem?
By Kathy on Apr 3, 2008 2:32 pm |
I just love how the Obama supporters on this site talk about civil discourse while bashing Bill and Hillary Clinton every chance they get. Barack Obama is an electable candidate, no doubt. Unless his rabid supporters sink his chances by completely ostracizing Hillary Clinton supporters. For all the nastiness and crudeness you people attribute to Bill and Hillary Clinton, right back at ya.
By Angel Gabrielle on Apr 3, 2008 8:03 pm |
Sincere question for the Hillary folk - please provide some links to illustrate how you formed the opinion that Obama has played dirty politics too. I only see one candidate running a scorched earth campaign, but hey, I’m open to enlightenment. Thanks a bunch.
