File Under: Things that Will Never, Ever, Ever Happen
I think we may have found something even more destined for failure than President Obama’s Afghanistan strategy.
ATHENS, Ga. — An animal rights organization says the use of a live bulldog mascot contributes to the breed’s health problems and wants the University of Georgia to consider an alternative.
PETA suggests Georgia could use a robot dog or a costumed mascot instead of the white English bulldogs that have represented the school at football games since 1956.
Dude, I can’t think of a single constituency less likely to get traction with Georgia Footbawl fans than PETA. I mean, I’m a total bleeding heart liberal commie and I think PETA are a bunch of holier-than-thou publicity whores who would do the world and all its animals a huge favor by eating a bag of lightly salted rat dicks and dying en masse. This whole idea of theirs is made of total FAIL.
Shit, I hope they come to Athens and try protesting at a UGA game. That would be awesome. They’d be someone’s new hood ornament before you can say, “Vegetarians taste just like chicken!”

Yeah, let’s protest a dog that’s treated like royalty; that’s flown first class to away games; who stays in hotel suites and who is petted and pampered in exchange for sitting on the sidelines for 12 games per year. I think that would be the dream life for any dog, and I’m a rabid animal lover. I have 2 dogs and 3 cats, and any of them would love to live the life the UGA dogs lived.
Many in animal welfare think that PETA is a joke….I think they may be on to something!

I know, I would *love* to have a lifestyle as opulent as those dogs. Freakin’ PETA, man.

The lack of animal protein and fat in their diets has apparently affected their brains and stifled rational thought. Care for animals, yes. Extreme, no.
T, love the ad at top. lol

ROFLMAO! god, I’ve missed your flair for hilarious insults. I raise my bag of lightly salted rat dicks to your return!

Not to take anything away from the gifted and talented sauropod, empressmitzi, but that particular phraseology comes from Mr. Jim Newell over at Wonkette.
As for PETA, yeah, T, you got their number. They do serve a purpose (the same tactic is employed by the NRA for totally-over-the-top gun rights - well except for the naked part, thank goodness) in defining a political position that allows saner souls a large middle ground to land in, and their highlighting of true animal cruelty is a good thing. But I don’t think Ugga the bulldog (I believe the current incarnation is Ugga IX) suffers too terribly.

LP has busted me, I confess. I thought it was too good to pass up.
Sorry to keep pulling out the spam comments, Sharon. They’re like a loose tooth to me. I just can’t leave them alone.
I can be a little type A sometimes.

That’s okay, I will just ignore them in the future, knowing you will find them. Did you get my mail?

Yeah, this is just epic stupid on PETA’s part. Uga is actually owned by an alum, and lives a pretty sweet life. Bully, who is the mascot at Mississippi State, actually has a house on campus at the vet school, with a flag that flies only when he is in residence. Smokey (at UT) is also privately owned. Uga tried to bite an Auburn player who got too close last year. As an Alabama fan, I find that kind of funny.
It’s kind of scary how much I know about SEC mascots!

Not to mention how much you know about the teams.

When all cats and dogs have loving homes, when all the cruel and abusive factory farms are shut down, when all unnecessary testing on animals is suspended, when the military no longer uses stray dogs for target practice…
…then–and only then–would we be justified in asking the difficult questions about whether an animal mascot is being treated nicely and getting the right number of pillows when he flies first-class, you know? Good grief. PETA has, for many years now, been making the same mistakes that extremist religions and extremist (”advanced”) feminism have been making: WE are holier than THOU, so do as we say.
Blue move, as far as I’m concerned.
