God bless the Wall Street Journal, who, only two years after George Allen’s “Macaca Moment” are finally figuring out that New Media is a force to be reckoned with in politics.

Television news organizations, facing unprecedented scrutiny, have often expressed contrition for poorly chosen words during this election season.

In a campaign that includes the first viable African-American presidential candidate, the lines of appropriate speech have become fuzzy.

Just an aside: No they haven’t. The rules of appropriate speech are the same as they’ve always been. What’s different now is only the implosion of Pox News due to the fact that we have a whole flotilla of Republican operatives who are sweating blood trying to figure out how close to the line they can go without actually shouting, “NIGGER NIGGER NIGGER!!!” into the cameras.

News organizations are under pressure from a broad network of self-appointed watchdogs, including organized groups like Media Matters and individuals. These watchdogs are likely to remain vigilant about gaffes, misstatements and potentially biased language through the November vote. Just this week, Gina McCauley, a well-known blogger in Austin, Texas, started michelleobamawatch.com to track the portrayal of Mrs. Obama in the news media.

Don’t forget Fight the Smears, where, due to popular demand, the Obama campaign has had to set up its own version of Snopes.com to keep track of all the lies.

But welcome to the party, WSJ.  Bloggers, Media Matters, MoveOn, we’ll be here.  Just like we’ve been.  Nice of you to notice for once.

    Geez, way to stay on top of things, WSJ. There was an article in the Picayune this am about a website launched to counter smears and lies against the Obamas. Trouble is, nowhere in the article do they actually give the address. Kinda defeats the purpose, unless the purpose is to keep reminding people that the lies are out there, without giving them the information they need to get the truth. How many non-blog type people are going to go to the trouble to find a site to counter some viral email their crazy GOP brother sent them?

    WTF? I could see it if they were like a lot of folks, using the credit cards to stretch the paycheck a bit. But they are most assuredly NOT like most people. Seems like rich people stay rich by making smart decisions about money, and this seems pretty dumb to me.

    Am I missing something here?

    I’m not sure about American banks madmommy, but here they often give interest-free cards to “important” customers, yoy know, the onces rich enough to actually pay for it.
